Individual Sentenced to Six Months for Leaving Rental Home Uninhabitable

A man in Finland has been sentenced to six months in prison after leaving a rental home in a state that rendered it uninhabitable. This incident, reported by the newspaper Itä-Sanomat, involved a single-family house that he rented for six years.

In addition to the prison sentence, the individual is required to pay €35,000 in damages and compensation for the extensive repairs needed for the property, which is less than 70 square meters in size. The tenant neglected to inform the landlord about the severe damages affecting the home, which included excessive humidity and structural issues.

The condition of the house was alarming, with reports indicating that there were twenty large containers of water found inside. This situation prompted the landlord to take legal action, as the tenant had replaced two air source heat pumps but failed to address the underlying issues that led to the water accumulation.

Despite the tenant”s claims that the installed pumps “did not cause any damage,” the court ruled that he was responsible for the deterioration of the property and the resulting expenses incurred by the landlord.

This case highlights the responsibilities of tenants in maintaining rental properties and the potential legal consequences of failing to do so. The court”s decision serves as a warning to others about the importance of upholding rental agreements and ensuring properties remain habitable.
