Nino Becerra, an economist, expressed his frustration regarding the ongoing drought situation in Catalonia as reservoir levels continue to drop for the fourth consecutive week. His reaction came through social media, where he cited an article detailing the alarming decrease in water levels.
As of now, reservoirs in the region are reported to be at just 73.47 percent of their capacity. While this figure is an improvement compared to the previous year”s levels, Becerra warns that the situation could worsen if rainfall does not increase significantly this autumn.
Public data from the authorities indicates that the current water levels in the reservoirs are at a concerning low, which has not been seen in recent months. Becerra”s remarks reflect a broader concern regarding the management of water resources by local administrations. He pointed out that the frustration stems not only from the natural patterns of drought but also from the failure of authorities to implement effective measures to prevent such situations from recurring.
Becerra”s comments also referenced the severe drought experienced in Catalonia from 2017 to 2022, which was deemed the most severe in the region”s history. During that time, the area underwent 56 consecutive months of below-average rainfall, forcing residents to adapt to challenging water restrictions.
Authorities had pledged to better prepare for future droughts, yet Becerra”s recent social media posts suggest that he believes little has been done to address these ongoing issues. His critical tweet has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of political responses to the water crisis, highlighting the need for proactive solutions in managing Catalonia”s water resources.
