Sumar Proposes New Holiday to Celebrate European Identity

The political party Sumar, led by Yolanda Díaz, has put forward a proposal in Congress to introduce a new holiday into the calendar. This initiative aims to establish “European Day” as a recognized celebration, which, according to party representatives, would promote a sense of belonging to Europe.

Supporters of the proposal argue that instituting this holiday could raise awareness about European identity. They point out that social media should play a crucial role in fostering this identity, as many citizens often perceive directives from the European Union as “unknown” or “distant” due to communication issues.

The idea of creating a collective European identity has been pursued for years among member states. The origin of European Day dates back to May 9, commemorating the Schuman Declaration, which called for the establishment of what is now known as the European Union, with the goal of maintaining peace following the world wars.

In a recent event held at the Teatro Alcázar in Madrid, representatives of Sumar emphasized their commitment to expanding democracy and securing rights, stating, “Sumar was born to gain rights and broaden democracy, not to remain in the shadows.” They also criticized the rearmament plans proposed by Europe at that time, asserting that “Von der Leyen”s rearmament plan undermines the birth of Europe. It is not about how much, but about where we are heading.”
