The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 10 officially launched the 2025 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) from October 1 to 3, 2025, at the Bayfront Arena in Oroquieta City, Northern Mindanao. This three-day event attracted prominent figures from the DOST System, local government units, academic institutions, and partner organizations, focusing on innovative technologies, impactful research, and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and inclusive growth.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from DOST Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho Mabborang, DOST-Northern Mindanao Regional Director Engr. Romela Ratilla, Oroquieta City Mayor Hon. Lemuel Meyrick Acosta, and Misamis Occidental Governor Atty. Henry Oaminal, among other officials and partners.
In his keynote address, Solidum highlighted the critical need to ensure that no community is overlooked in the pursuit of sustainable and intelligent development. He emphasized the objective for every city, town, and province to achieve the sustainable development goals by embracing smart and sustainable practices.
Mabborang underscored the significance of grassroots initiatives, stating that sustainability transcends being a mere buzzword and is a reality being cultivated at the community level. Mayor Acosta expressed pride in hosting the RSTW, viewing it as both an honor and a significant milestone for Oroquieta City, which is making significant progress towards becoming a smart city.
Ratilla shared her aspirations for the Bayfront Arena, envisioning it as a platform not only for showcasing technological advancements but also for fostering dialogue, building networks, recognizing scientific achievements, and awarding impactful projects. Oaminal echoed this sentiment, affirming that the event symbolizes a collective commitment to shaping a future that embraces technology, inclusivity, and sustainability.
The RSTW also featured important ceremonial events, including the handover of the DOST Research and Development Agenda to Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology and La Salle University – Ozamiz City. Additionally, project funds were ceremonially transferred for establishing a 21st Century Learning Environment Model Classroom at Misamis Occidental Science and Technology High School.
Over the course of the three-day event, participants and attendees engaged in various forums, technology exhibitions, and recognition ceremonies, all of which illustrated the transformative power of science, technology, and innovation in driving communities towards a smarter and more sustainable future in Northern Mindanao.
