North Korea Dismisses Denuclearization Talks as “Pipe Dream”

North Korea has declared that the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is an unattainable “pipe dream.” This statement follows news of an upcoming summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese leader Xi Jinping scheduled for Saturday, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Gyeongju, South Korea.

In a report by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, North Korea criticized the ongoing discussions about denuclearization, asserting that the Republic of Korea (ROK) is misguided in its efforts to challenge the Democratic People”s Republic of Korea”s (DPRK) status as a nuclear state. The statement indicated that South Korea”s attempts to deny this status only highlight its “lack of common sense.”

Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Ho emphasized that North Korea intends to demonstrate over time that denuclearization is not a feasible objective. The remarks reflect North Korea”s entrenched position regarding its nuclear capabilities amid international negotiations.

The summit between Xi and Lee is expected to focus on various regional security issues, including the denuclearization talks. However, North Korea”s latest comments suggest that any hopes for progress in these discussions may be overly optimistic.

The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue, but North Korea”s strong rejection of the concept of denuclearization signifies a significant hurdle in future negotiations.
