New Directors Appointed at DRDL and ASL in Hyderabad

Ankathi Raju has been appointed as the director of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), while Dr. M. Raghavendra Rao has taken on the role of director at the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in Hyderabad.

Raju, an expert in missile propulsion technology, brings over 30 years of experience to his new position. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Osmania University and holds an MTech in Aeronautical Engineering (Propulsion) from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His notable achievements include significant advancements in the solid fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) propulsion system, as well as developing liquid propulsion systems for various missiles, including Prithvi, Agni, and Mission Shakti, which is India”s anti-satellite (ASAT) initiative.

In addition to his work on propulsion systems, Raju has made contributions to the design of reaction control systems, interceptor missiles, and axial flow compressors, showcasing his extensive expertise in missile technology.

Meanwhile, Dr. Raghavendra Rao, who graduated in mechanical engineering from NIT Bhopal, has a master”s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT Chennai and a PhD from NIT Warangal. He has played a pivotal role in India”s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), a project initiated under the leadership of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

As the technology director for liquid propulsion at DRDL, Dr. Rao led the design and development of propulsion systems for the Agni missiles, air defense systems, advanced naval technologies, and hypersonic capabilities. His work in developing liquid propellant-based control systems and scramjet propulsion has garnered significant recognition in the field.

These appointments mark a significant development in India”s defense research, reinforcing the nation”s commitment to advancing its missile technology and defense capabilities.
