Spanish Attorney General Faces Unusual Trial Over Leak of Secrets

A trial involving the Attorney General of Spain, Álvaro García Ortiz, is drawing significant attention due to its unprecedented nature and the legal implications it carries. Legal expert Javier Gómez Bermúdez discussed the case on the show “laSexta Xplica,” where he noted that the decision of a magistrate to proceed to trial suggests there are substantial indications warranting this step.

Gómez Bermúdez emphasized that he lacks full knowledge of the investigation and police reports, making it difficult to form a definitive judgment. However, he expressed that the situation is not particularly surprising. He remarked, “It is not strange that Mr. Hurtado decided to bring the case to trial.” He posed questions regarding whether the prosecution”s actions were driven by factors unrelated to the alleged crime.

This trial is historic as it marks the first time a Spanish attorney general has faced such legal scrutiny. The outcome rests in the hands of seven magistrates from the Supreme Court, who will determine García Ortiz”s guilt or innocence.

The origins of this case trace back to February 2, 2024, when Carlos Neira, the lawyer for Isabel Díaz Ayuso”s partner, sent an email to the prosecution proposing a settlement. After a lack of response, on March 12, further developments unfolded. The following day, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, from the Community of Madrid, publicly denied the validity of the information, asserting that it was the prosecution suggesting a settlement with González Amador. This was after the attorney general had communicated with several prosecutors that evening, seeking correspondence between the prosecution and González Amador”s lawyer.
