Ethan Hawke Expresses Delight at Potential Oscar Win for “Blue Moon”

Ethan Hawke recently expressed his enthusiasm regarding the possibility of winning an Oscar for his role in “Blue Moon.” During a tribute at the Miami Film Festival GEMS, which concludes this Wednesday, he stated he would feel “great if he deserved it.” Dressed in attire that nods to his Texan roots, Hawke humorously acknowledged his appreciation for such recognitions.

The film, which premiered in October, has garnered critical acclaim, further solidifying Hawke”s reputation in the industry. He conveyed gratitude for the acknowledgment he received and emphasized the importance of film festivals, stating they are “the lifeblood of the industry” and help “keep cinema alive.” The actor was honored at the autumn edition of the Miami Film Festival during a gala hosted at Miami-Dade College, attended by hundreds of fans.

This recognition comes as Hawke prepares to celebrate his 55th birthday. The university collaborated with Variety to commend his extensive career spanning over three decades. He reflected on his iconic character Jesse from the “Before” trilogy, known for its rich dialogues with actress Julie Delpy, as well as his early role alongside Robin Williams in “Dead Poets Society,” and his Oscar-nominated performance as a rookie narcotics officer in “Training Day.”

Hawke also participated in a panel discussion about his career, moderated by Variety co-editor-in-chief, who remarked, “Everyone has a favorite Ethan Hawke movie, and he represents the artist who is constantly reinventing himself. No one deserves the award more.” The conversation highlighted Hawke”s impressive journey as an actor, playwright, novelist, and filmmaker.

Discussing his collaborations with director Richard Linklater, Hawke noted the director”s unique humility and dedication to his projects. He recalled the 12-year commitment Linklater made to “Boyhood,” a film with which Hawke felt a deep connection, coinciding with the birth of one of his children. Among his recent endeavors is a role in a film where he plays a citizen journalist who refers to himself as a “truthstorian,” a character he feels resonates with him at this stage of his life.
