The television host Risto Mejide recently addressed the controversy surrounding a protest by LaLiga players at the start of matches. This discussion took place on October 20 during a new episode of his program “Todo es mentira,” which covers both national and international political and social issues.
During the episode, Mejide welcomed guests Ricardo Reyes and Cristóbal Soria to analyze the weekend”s events regarding the protest. Players across the majority of LaLiga matches paused for the first 15 seconds as a demonstration regarding their dissatisfaction with the lack of information about an upcoming match between Barcelona and Villarreal, which is set to take place in Miami.
Mejide expressed skepticism about the players” motivations, using irony to question whether they were genuinely awaiting information. He remarked, “Do you think they are waiting for information?” Soria, however, indicated that the players are primarily interested in understanding how revenue would be shared if they were to play in another country in the future. He noted, “This match is one we have played before. What does this mean? When LaLiga sits down and says, “I will give you 25% of what the club earns in the locker room”… I am just making this up.” This perspective appeared to clash with the views of many of their colleagues.
Mejide further added a humorous twist to the situation, suggesting that the players are financially motivated by the sport, saying, “You know how much a Ferrari consumes? It needs fuel all month.” This comment underscores the ongoing discussion about player compensation and the financial aspects of football.
The conversation highlights the broader issues within LaLiga regarding transparency and communication between players and management, as the situation continues to evolve.
