The House of Representatives of Puerto Rico recently commemorated International Chef Day by honoring eight remarkable chefs who have made significant contributions to Puerto Rican cuisine and its global recognition. This inaugural event was spearheaded by Representative Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló, who acknowledged the dedication, achievements, and influence of the chefs being honored.
Rodríguez Aguiló remarked, “Your work goes beyond merely preparing recipes or serving exquisite dishes. You are artists who create experiences, narrate stories, and preserve our cultural identity through flavor. Each dish you prepare embodies discipline, emotion, and Puerto Rican pride. You are the guardians of our culinary heritage and exemplify what excellence, service, and perseverance mean. Thank you for inspiring new generations and demonstrating that we can build from the kitchen.”
The chefs recognized at the ceremony included Nasha Fondeur, Yamilette Seda, Marilyn López, Giovanna Huyke, Marisol Hernández, Érika Solórzano, Myrta Pérez, and Noelian Ortiz. Each has played a vital role in the growth, innovation, and education of Puerto Rican cuisine in various capacities and specializations.
During the ceremony held at El Capitolio, the honored chefs received a medal and a resolution from the House of Representatives, symbolizing gratitude for their contributions to culinary arts. International Chef Day, celebrated on October 20 each year, was established in 2004 by the World Association of Chefs Societies to honor culinary professionals and highlight their role in promoting creativity, food education, and gastronomic sustainability.
The tribute concluded with a message of appreciation from Rodríguez Aguiló, who reaffirmed the House”s commitment to showcase local talent. “Puerto Rico boasts world-class chefs, and recognizing their work is also a celebration of our culture and identity. Today, we thank you for elevating Puerto Rico”s name both within and beyond the culinary world,” he stated, alongside House President Carlos “Johnny” Méndez.
