Malaysia and researchers from ASEAN member states have collaboratively developed the ASEAN Ahead report through the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. The document, titled “ASEAN STI Ecosystem Foresight 2035 and Beyond,” is designed to establish the region as a significant player on the global stage.
Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Mohammad Yusof Apdal, indicated that the report acts as a strategic framework, detailing prospective directions for the region”s science, technology, and innovation ecosystem. “This report, which will be officially launched this Friday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is a testament to Malaysia”s acknowledged expertise and the commitment of ASM to enhance regional scientific collaboration and foresight,” he stated.
According to Mohammad Yusof, the report signifies a regional dedication to foresight-driven planning, aiming to bolster ASEAN”s ability to tackle intricate global challenges. “This initiative reminds us that foresight is not just about predicting the future; it is about actively shaping it,” he remarked.
The deputy minister urged members of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) to fortify their national foresight initiatives and collaborate effectively. He emphasized that Malaysia is prepared to partner in sharing methodologies and exploring methods to standardize data frameworks for collective resilience and mutual prosperity.
As part of the 13th Malaysia Plan, a periodic megatrend analysis report utilizing a foresight approach will be created to direct research, development, commercialization, and innovation efforts. Additionally, Malaysia”s proposal for the APEC Open Science Alliance was acknowledged, highlighting broader initiatives to advocate for open and responsible data sharing.
Welcomed by APEC economies, the APEC Open Science Alliance aims to connect open-science focal points throughout the region by 2026. “I invite everyone to adopt open and responsible data sharing, and we believe that AASSA members can make a significant contribution to this endeavor,” said Mohammad Yusof.
The recent two-day workshop, co-organized by AASSA and ASM, attracted over 100 participants, including representatives from member academies and scientific societies. In his welcome address, ASM president Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen Tengku Ibrahim stated that the report demonstrates how foresight and collaborative governance mechanisms can aid nations in anticipating disruptions, aligning strategic priorities, and minimizing redundant efforts.
