All iPhone users have received a critical warning regarding a potential security vulnerability that could expose their devices to hackers through shared WiFi networks. This alert, shared by TikTok user @PainfullyHonestNews, highlights how to safeguard personal data from cyber threats.
The user advises iPhone owners to inspect a specific setting in the device”s Settings menu. They should search for “AirPlay,” which allows users to stream content wirelessly to compatible devices, such as smart TVs and computers. At the top of the AirPlay settings, users will find an option labeled “AirPlay and Continuity” or “AirPlay & Handoff.”
Within this section, there is a setting named “Automatically AirPlay.” This option presents three potential configurations: “Never,” “Ask,” and “Automatic.” The TikTok user warns that the “Automatic” setting makes it easier for malicious actors to access personal devices if they know how to exploit the vulnerability.
The advice is clear: keep the setting on “Never” or “Ask” to maintain security. The TikTok user emphasized the risks associated with having it on “Automatic,” stating, “This could be a very risky move if you do.” This vulnerability, termed “Airborne” by researchers at the cybersecurity firm Oligo, poses a significant risk to iPhone users who have not updated their operating system.
Although Apple has issued patches and updates to address this flaw earlier in the year, individuals who have not yet upgraded their iOS remain vulnerable. Additionally, third-party devices that support the AirPlay protocol may still be at risk.
Gal Elbaz, Chief Technology Officer at Oligo, further elaborated on the issue in an interview with Wired, saying, “Because AirPlay is supported in such a wide variety of devices, there are a lot that will take years to patch or they will never be patched. And it”s all because of vulnerabilities in one piece of software that affects everything.”
Reactions to the TikTok advice were positive, with several users expressing gratitude for the guidance. One person commented, “Thank you for this. Mine was on automatic so I changed it to never.” Another shared, “Mine was on automatic, thank you I just changed it.” A third user noted, “Thank you mate, mine was actually on automatic. It”s on never now.” A fourth individual remarked, “Another lesson learned, thank you.”
In related news, last week, Apple announced its intentions to launch a new MacBook Pro, fresh iPad Pro models, and an upgraded Vision Pro headset. While the external designs of these devices remain unchanged, they will all be equipped with a new Apple-designed M5 processor, promising enhanced performance and efficiency.
