FOSSA Systems, a Spanish company, has been chosen by Open Cosmos to deliver satellite IoT connectivity technology as part of the Spanish Atlantic Constellation program, an initiative spearheaded by the Spanish Space Agency (AEE). This agreement includes the provision of IoT payloads, antennas, software, and ongoing technical support for the satellites being developed by Open Cosmos as the main contractor for the project.
The satellites are expected to be delivered by 2027, marking a significant step towards establishing a sovereign and secure communications infrastructure in low Earth orbit (LEO).
According to Julián Fernández, CEO of FOSSA Systems, “FOSSA is positioned as the leading provider of secure SatCom IoT. This contract reinforces the global need for sovereign and secure communication systems being deployed by governments and institutions worldwide. We appreciate the support and trust of the Government of Spain in deploying this system in Spain.”
The Spanish Atlantic Constellation is aligned with European efforts to ensure autonomy in space communications and enhance national technological capabilities. Each microsatellite will incorporate four essential instruments for collecting and transmitting terrestrial data:
- A GNSS reflectometry sensor, designed to measure reflections of navigation signals off the Earth”s surface.
- An AIS receiver, which will enable the tracking of vessels and monitoring of maritime activity.
- Multispectral optical cameras for global Earth observation.
- The SatCom IoT payload from FOSSA Systems, which will provide secure and energy-efficient connectivity for data collection in remote areas.
The IoT technology developed by FOSSA will be crucial to the mission, ensuring reliable, sovereign, and cost-effective data links that support institutional and governmental applications in sectors such as security, environmental monitoring, and land management.
The IoT connectivity ecosystem to be deployed by FOSSA Systems will facilitate the monitoring of natural environments, help prevent forest fires, and provide secure communications for emergency personnel and ground operations. Such capabilities highlight the importance of space IoT as critical infrastructure for modern societies.
With this contract, FOSSA Systems strengthens its position as a key player in bolstering European capabilities for secure and independent satellite communications and as a technological leader in next-generation space IoT.
