On October 22, 2025, the Government of Canada announced a significant investment of nearly $11 million in research infrastructure. This funding, channeled through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), aims to bolster the work of 43 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) across 27 universities throughout the nation.
These financial contributions, provided via the CFI”s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF), are designed to assist universities in attracting and retaining leading researchers. By collaborating with the CRC program, the CFI seeks to enhance the effectiveness of government investments, ensuring that funds support both groundbreaking research and the necessary infrastructure for its execution.
The projects benefiting from this funding encompass a wide range of innovative research areas. Notable initiatives include the development of more secure and resilient artificial intelligence models and efforts to improve waste reprocessing from mining operations, aiming to maximize resource recovery while minimizing environmental impacts.
“Our partnership with the Canada Research Chairs program ensures that Government of Canada investments have the greatest possible impact. By attracting and retaining top researchers and providing them with the cutting-edge tools and infrastructure they need to pursue bold ideas and advance innovation in areas that matter most, we”re working together to build a more resilient Canada,” stated Sylvain Charbonneau, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation operates with a forward-thinking mandate, empowering researchers to become global leaders and respond to emerging challenges. Its investments in advanced tools, instruments, and facilities at universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit institutions foster both curiosity-driven and mission-driven research, bridging disciplines and sectors.
