Telangana aims for Rs.1 lakh crore investment in life sciences by 2030

Telangana has announced an ambitious goal of securing Rs.1 lakh crore in investments within the life sciences sector by the year 2030, with the intention of creating five lakh jobs, according to Minister for IT and Industries Duddilla Sridhar Babu. Speaking at the AusBiotech International Conference 2025 held in Melbourne, which was organized in partnership with the Government of Victoria, the Minister detailed the state government”s comprehensive “Roadmap 2030” aimed at establishing Telangana as a leading global hub for life sciences.

Minister Sridhar Babu emphasized that Telangana is formulating an extensive life sciences policy designed to foster innovation, enhance infrastructure, and cultivate global partnerships. He highlighted the state”s commitment to advancing in the next phase of bio-digital growth. The Minister pointed out that Telangana consistently exceeds national averages in economic performance, contributing over five percent to India”s GDP despite ranking 11th in area and 12th in population.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, Telangana”s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth rate reached 8.2 percent, surpassing the national average of 7.6 percent. Over the past 20 months, the state has attracted Rs.3.2 lakh crore in new investments, with Rs.63,000 crore stemming from the life sciences sector alone. Additionally, exports from this sector exceeded Rs.26,000 crore from April to December 2024.

The state aims to elevate the value of its life sciences economy from USD 80 billion to USD 250 billion by 2030. Citing a report from global consultancy CBRE, Sridhar Babu noted that Hyderabad has been recognized in the Global Life Sciences Atlas 2025 as one of the world”s foremost life sciences clusters, alongside cities like Boston, San Francisco, Cambridge, Beijing, and Tokyo, making it the only Indian city on the list.

The growth of life sciences office leasing in Hyderabad has been significant, increasing from 0.6 million square feet in 2022 to 2.4 million square feet in 2024, a clear indicator of the sector”s rapid expansion and the confidence investors have in it. The Minister also mentioned that Telangana is heavily investing in preparing a “ready-to-deploy bio-digital workforce” to align with the demands of emerging technologies in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and healthcare.

Among the initiatives taken by the Telangana government are the establishment of the Life Sciences University and the Young India Skills University, both aimed at nurturing next-generation talent in advanced scientific and technological fields. Concurrently, the state is collaborating with the World Economic Forum“s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and other international organizations to ensure that skill development and innovation ecosystems are in sync with the requirements of the Bio-Digital era.

“Telangana”s strength lies in its innovation ecosystem. Our mantra is not just “Make in India,” but “Invent in Telangana,”” stated the Minister. He referenced important initiatives such as Genome Valley, Medical Devices Park, B-Hub, Bharat Future City, as well as progressive industrial policies, plug-and-play parks, single-window clearances, and a wealth of STEM talent, all of which position Telangana as a highly competitive destination for life sciences investments.

Sridhar Babu extended an invitation to Australian companies to investigate investment prospects in burgeoning sectors such as Cell and Gene Therapy, Biologics and Biosimilars, mRNA Vaccines, Contract Research, Development and Manufacturing (CRDM), Diagnostics, MedTech, and Digital Health. He also underscored Telangana”s emphasis on AI-based Drug Discovery, Genomics, Green Biomanufacturing, Agri-Biotech, and Animal Health, which he believes present substantial opportunities for collaboration and value generation.

The Minister assured that the government of Telangana would provide comprehensive support to all investors and expressed optimism that the conference would initiate a “Victoria-Telangana Innovation Corridor.” He concluded by inviting prominent life sciences companies to participate in BioAsia 2026, scheduled to take place in Hyderabad in February.
