On November 4, Wharton economist Judd Kessler will illuminate the concept of hidden markets that influence various aspects of daily life. His talk is scheduled for 4:30 PM at the Lewis Auditorium in Goldwin Smith Hall.
In his presentation, Kessler, author of “Lucky by Design: The Hidden Economics You Need to Get More of What You Want,” will delve into the mechanics of these markets. He aims to equip attendees with strategies to navigate these systems effectively and gain advantageous outcomes.
Kessler asserts that securing reservations at top restaurants, receiving job offers, obtaining spots in prestigious preschools and colleges, finding a partner through dating apps, or even receiving a critical organ transplant are not purely based on chance. Unlike conventional markets governed by pricing mechanisms, these hidden markets operate on different principles.
“In these types of hidden markets, what you get depends on the choices you make and the rules the market operates on,” noted Ted O”Donoghue, Zubrow Professor of Economics in the College of Arts & Sciences and co-organizer of the event. “We are fortunate to have Judd Kessler here to share his unique perspectives in maneuvering through such markets.”
