The European Union (EU) has initiated plans to negotiate a new agreement with Nigeria focused on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI). During the 18th annual research conference at the University of Lagos, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, highlighted that this proposed partnership aims to foster joint research initiatives, facilitate academic exchanges, and promote investments in technology infrastructure.
Mignot emphasized the importance of research in promoting inclusive and transformative development. He stated that the EU”s collaboration with Nigeria is rooted in common objectives, which include empowering scientists, innovators, and young researchers to leverage knowledge for impactful advancements in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), renewable energy, and healthcare.
“Science is most effective when it transcends borders,” Mignot remarked. “The European Union and its Member States are investing in research that aligns with the green, digital, and inclusive transitions we are pursuing in Europe. We are committed to partnering with Nigeria to achieve these goals.”
The ambassador noted that this agreement would enhance connectivity among researchers and academic institutions, boosting Nigeria”s position within the global innovation landscape and creating further opportunities for young entrepreneurs and researchers.
Mignot also highlighted the EU”s Horizon Europe program, a significant initiative that allocates nearly €100 billion to support research and innovation on a global scale. He reiterated that Nigerian researchers are invited to participate, stating, “Horizon Europe is accessible to Nigerian researchers because the quest for knowledge is a universal endeavor.” He added, “When science fosters connections among people, it contributes to building a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable world.”
Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos, praised the EU for its ongoing support, calling the collaboration a significant achievement in Nigeria”s efforts to enhance its research capabilities and utilize innovation for development. “Africa must adopt innovation that addresses our unique realities. Collaborations like this allow us to convert research into practical solutions that can improve lives and empower communities, ranging from sustainable energy advancements to health and AI,” she stated.
Additionally, she mentioned that the university is establishing a Human-Centered AI Research Hub that focuses on ethical and inclusive innovation. “AI presents Africa not only with an opportunity to catch up but also to take the lead in shaping the future,” she affirmed.
Salami Mayowa Michael, a PhD candidate specializing in Estate Management at the University of Lagos, shared his insights on the transformative impact of AI. “AI is revolutionizing how we learn and conduct research, enabling us to access data, collaborate internationally, and even perform property evaluations using drones,” he noted.
