Remembering Arturo O. Valencia: A Life of Love and Resilience

Arturo O. Valencia, affectionately known as “Art,” passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family. A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, father-in-law, and friend, he was born in North Hollywood to Alejandro and Luisa Valencia. His life epitomized hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Art was predeceased by his cherished wife, Nellie Valencia, with whom he shared a profound partnership that lasted over 73 years. Together, they nurtured four children: Mary George, Arturo Valencia, Andy Valencia, and Becky Trillo. His legacy continues through his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who he valued deeply.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, sister Lola Gonzalez and brothers Alex, Raymond, and John. Art is survived by his brothers Tito and Choco.

Beyond his dedication to family, Art reveled in various passions. The family often camped at Glen Ivy, creating treasured memories. He was an enthusiastic bowler, competing for over four decades at the Bowl-O-Drome and later at Gardena Bowl. In the 1960s, he played in a men”s softball league at Torrance Park and was known as a skilled pool player, winning numerous tournaments and gaining respect as one of the best in Torrance.

Raised in a close-knit community in La Rana, Torrance, Art attended Torrance High School. He built a distinguished career marked by an impressive work ethic and expertise. He dedicated 20 years to Soule” Steel in Carson before becoming a Master Mechanic at McDonnell Douglas, where his precision and hard work earned him great respect and numerous accolades.

A self-made man, Art transformed his modest beginnings into a life filled with love, purpose, and achievement. He took immense pride in the home he lovingly restored, with each project reflecting his craftsmanship and dedication. A voracious reader, he was a lifelong subscriber to the Daily Breeze, taking joy in the written word, particularly knowing that his sons had once delivered that very paper.

Although Art is no longer physically present, his spirit lives on through the stories we tell, the lessons he imparted, and the love he generously shared. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Bethel Baptist Church of Torrance, located at 1501 W Carson St, Torrance, CA 90501-3934.
