Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications company in India, has announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Viasat India, a global leader in satellite communications. This partnership aims to enhance skill development and promote industry readiness in the field of satellite communications and emerging technologies, including the commercialisation of advanced uncrewed aircraft solutions.
The collaboration will see the Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT), which is a specialized training center operated by BSNL in Jabalpur, provide essential infrastructure and logistical support for local technology training initiatives. Both BRBRAITT and Viasat will concentrate on improving skill development while also establishing a Centre of Excellence dedicated to Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced technologies.
Robert J Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, stated, “This is a strategic collaboration that aligns with our goal to foster innovation and build indigenous capabilities. The Centre of Excellence at BRBRAITT will equip a new generation of professionals with critical skills, while our work to commercialise Viasat”s Velaris will enable new and innovative services for our customers, driving economic growth and development across the country.”
BRBRAITT is set to offer state-of-the-art infrastructure, classrooms, and necessary logistical support to facilitate the training programs. Engineering students specializing in IT, Electronics & Communication, and Computer Science will have the chance to engage in sessions and demonstrations of Viasat terminals at this Centre of Excellence.
This collaboration between BSNL and Viasat India was formally launched during the recently held “India Mobile Congress 2025”. Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will work together to commercialise Viasat”s Velaris uncrewed air solutions specifically for the Indian market. Viasat”s Velaris service provides secure and reliable satellite communications, enabling uncrewed aircraft to operate beyond visual line of sight.
Gautam Sharma, Managing Director of Viasat India, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are excited to expand our work with BSNL, a trusted leader in Indian telecommunications. These collaborations are a testament to our commitment to India”s “Digital India” vision and will help unlock the immense potential of the country”s low-altitude economy.”
