Gabriel Rufian Predicts Future Pact Between Junts and PP After Coalition Breakdown

Gabriel Rufian, a prominent politician from the ERC party, recently commented on the recent dissolution of the coalition between Junts and PSOE, suggesting that future collaboration between Junts and the PP is imminent. His statements came in light of the unresolved issue regarding the transfer of immigration powers to Catalonia, which he believes was the final straw, compounded by the lack of amnesty that had been promised.

A video shared by Rufian on social media platform X compiles various instances where he expressed skepticism about the longevity of the Junts-PSOE agreement. He has consistently indicated that the strategy of Carles Puigdemont“s party would eventually lead them to negotiate with the PP.

In a pointed address to the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, Rufian remarked on the constraints placed on Feijóo by the far-right party Vox, implying that his options for collaboration had significantly narrowed. He noted, “You currently can only negotiate with Ortega Smith and Abascal.” These comments reflect a broader critique of the current political landscape where traditional alliances have shifted.

Rufian”s predictions are not new; in a 2024 interview, he emphasized three key points: first, that the PP and PSOE represent similar ideologies; second, that they both claim to represent Catalonia; and third, that Feijóo has control over the judiciary, which is a critical factor in political negotiations.

He further elaborated on the likely future scenario during a public appearance outside the Congress of Deputies, suggesting that the groundwork is already being laid for such an alliance, despite Junts” apparent hesitation to make a decisive move. “They are simply clearing the path for what is to come,” he asserted.

In a recent session in parliament, Rufian employed irony to underscore his arguments, referencing a famous line from a book about a “specter haunting Europe,” likening it to the presence of right-wing and far-right ideologies infiltrating the legislative chamber.

The upcoming consultation among Junts” membership, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, will reveal the party”s stance following this significant political upheaval.
