Academic with Trump Ties Joins Nigel Farage as Senior Adviser

A prominent academic linked to former President Donald Trump has been appointed as a senior adviser to Nigel Farage at Reform UK. The announcement was made by Zia Yusuf, the party”s head of policy, who praised James Orr, an associate professor of the history of religion at Cambridge University, as a “brilliant academic, theologian, thinker.”

Yusuf expressed confidence in Orr”s ability to significantly influence the direction of the party, stating, “He has become a close friend, and is someone who I believe will have a pivotal role in shaping the future of this country.” He emphasized that Orr will contribute to attracting more talented individuals to the Reform team.

While not widely recognized in public circles, Orr has had a considerable impact on the philosophy guiding the Trump administration. JD Vance, the Vice President, has referred to him as his “British sherpa,” indicating a close relationship between the two. Reports indicate that Vance visited Orr at his home in Cambridge in August.

Orr”s role at Reform UK will involve creating networks of “defectors” across various sectors, including academia, business, and law, as well as identifying potential candidates for parliamentary positions. In an interview with The Telegraph, Orr discussed the importance of giving second chances to prospective Reform politicians, stating, “I think we should be a party of second chances. We know what it”s like. We”re going to support them.”

He pointed to Vance”s stance regarding a leaked group chat involving members of the Young Republicans, where numerous offensive messages were exchanged. Vance had previously stated, “The reality is that kids do stupid things, especially young boys,” reflecting a belief in the capacity for youthful mistakes and growth. Orr supported Vance”s view, asserting, “I admire what the vice-president has done, and I think he”s shown spine and not gone along with the standard playbook… young people make mistakes.”
