Spelman College has been awarded a significant federal grant of $483,620 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) aimed at reshaping the education of future biomedical scientists. This funding, which spans three years, has been secured by Mentewab Ayalew, Ph.D., a biology professor at the institution.
The grant will facilitate the development of a comprehensive curriculum focused on genomic data science. This initiative is particularly timely, as there is a critical shortage of professionals equipped to handle the extensive datasets that are becoming increasingly essential in the fields of cancer research, human genetics, neuroscience, and disease prevention.
Through this project, student engagement will be significantly heightened, allowing them to tackle relevant scientific challenges. These challenges include the analysis of genetic variants associated with cancer, the examination of pathogen data, and the investigation of the effects of metal pollution on microbiome health.
