Sumar Proposes New Holiday to Celebrate European Identity

The political party Sumar, led by Yolanda Díaz, has put forward a proposal to introduce a new holiday into the calendar. This initiative was presented at the Congress through a non-binding proposal that seeks to designate May 9 as a day of celebration of Europe. Sumar believes that recognizing the Day of Europe can enhance the sense of belonging among citizens.

According to the proposal, social media plays a crucial role in cultivating a European identity. Often, initiatives from Europe are perceived by citizens as “unknown” or “distant,” which poses a communication challenge. The Day of Europe, celebrated on May 9, aims to address this perception.

The concept of fostering a collective European identity among member states of the European Union has been a long-term goal. This effort gained momentum after the proposal for establishing what is now known as the European Union, intended to promote peace following the world wars. In a recent gathering at the Teatro Alcázar in Madrid, Sumar emphasized its mission to expand democracy and rights, asserting that it was not formed to exist on the sidelines.

Furthermore, Sumar criticized the proposed rearmament plan from European leadership, stating that it undermines the very essence of Europe. The focus, they argue, should not solely be on military strength but rather on the direction in which Europe is moving.
