The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and WorldFish have announced the launch of the Sustho Sagor initiative, which translates to “Healthy Ocean.” This project is made possible through a $5.5 million grant from the Blue Action Fund. The main objective is to expand Bangladesh”s network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and to protect over 12,700 square kilometers of vital marine habitats in the Bay of Bengal.
The Sustho Sagor initiative represents a significant effort to enhance marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fisheries in the region. The project will focus on conserving critical marine ecosystems that are essential for both wildlife and local communities that rely on these resources for their livelihoods.
By increasing the area designated as protected, this initiative aims to address the threats posed by overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. The expansion of MPAs is expected to contribute to healthier ocean environments, which are crucial for the overall ecological balance.
With the backing of the Blue Action Fund, the WCS and WorldFish are poised to make meaningful strides in marine conservation in Bangladesh, ensuring that future generations can benefit from a thriving ocean ecosystem.
