A truck transporting rhesus monkeys for scientific research was involved in an accident on Tuesday afternoon in Jasper County, Mississippi. This incident resulted in the escape of three primates, prompting immediate concerns from local authorities.
The Jasper County Sheriff”s Department issued a statement indicating that these animals pose a “potential threat to health and are aggressive,” as they had been exposed to pathogens including hepatitis C and COVID-19. The monkeys weigh around 18 kilograms and are known to be aggressive towards humans, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment for their handling.
However, Tulane University, the source of the monkeys, provided a different perspective. Spokesperson Andrew Yawn clarified to local news outlets including WTVA and “The Guardian” that “the primates in question belong to another entity and are not infectious.” Yawn further stated that the university has been “actively cooperating with local authorities” and has dispatched a team of animal care experts to assist as needed.
Following the accident, two of the monkeys were recaptured and euthanized for safety reasons, as confirmed by the sheriff”s department. Authorities are still tracking the remaining monkey that has yet to be located, with search operations ongoing in the area. Residents have been advised to avoid the accident site and to report any sightings of the escaped primate.
Investigations into the accident and the exact origins of the monkeys are still underway.
