The City of San Antonio has unveiled the Municipal Archives Museum, providing an in-depth look at over three centuries of the city”s governance history. This new facility is located within the Municipal Archives & Records Center at 719 South Santa Rosa Avenue.
The museum features an array of preserved documents, photographs, artifacts, and multimedia displays that illustrate the development of San Antonio”s municipal government. City Clerk Debbie Racca-Sittre emphasized the museum”s role, stating, “The Municipal Archives Museum is more than a collection of historical records. It is a vibrant space where the community can connect with the legacy of civic service, government transparency, and the growth of our great city.”
Among the highlights of the inaugural exhibit are a hand-carved City Seal from 1925, crafted by woodcarver Johannes C. Scholze, and the minutes from the San Fernando de Bexar City Council dated 1818. Additionally, visitors can view an 1849 survey map of land owned by Samuel A. Maverick in downtown San Antonio, which notably includes the iconic Alamo.
Also featured are the lyrics and album for the city song “San Antonio, Ciudad de Encantos.” Admission to the museum is free, but it is open by appointment only during weekdays. Those interested in visiting can make requests or find more information on the museum”s website.
