Manila Officials Urged to Prepare for Potential Earthquake Threats

The Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Renato Solidum Jr., has called on officials in Manila to focus on enhancing their preparedness instead of fearing the anticipated seismic event known as “The Big One.” At the Executive Course on the Incident Command System held in Manila on Saturday, Solidum emphasized that effective preparedness begins with proper knowledge.

“We need to empower you and the people below you so they can find the most appropriate solutions in your areas,” stated Solidum. He highlighted the risks posed by the Manila Trench, an active geological fault line located west of Luzon, capable of producing earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 8.5 to 9.0. This trench represents a significant offshore threat to Metro Manila, with the potential for a tsunami to reach the city”s shores within an hour of such an event.

According to previous statements from DOST, the likelihood of experiencing “The Big One” is expected to increase as the year 2058 approaches. This forecast has prompted mayors across Metro Manila to implement various preparedness measures to ensure that residents are equipped to respond effectively.

In response to these warnings, the city government of Manila has distributed emergency go-bags to over 100,000 individuals, including students, local officials, and employees of the city hall. Additionally, Mayor Isko Moreno announced plans for a city-wide earthquake drill scheduled for next month, aimed at further preparing citizens for potential seismic events.
