The Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Renato Solidum Jr., has urged officials in Manila to prioritize preparedness rather than succumbing to fear regarding the potential for a significant earthquake, often referred to as “The Big One.” During an address at the Executive Course on the Incident Command System held in Manila on Saturday, Solidum highlighted the importance of education and knowledge in fostering readiness.
“We need to empower you and the people below you so they can find the most appropriate solutions in your areas,” Solidum stated. He cautioned that the Manila Trench, an active tectonic boundary located west of Luzon, poses a serious risk. This trench has the potential to generate earthquakes reaching magnitudes of 8.5 to 9.0, along with the possibility of a tsunami that could impact Metro Manila within an hour of occurrence.
Previously, the DOST warned that the likelihood of experiencing “The Big One” is increasing as the year 2058 approaches. This warning has prompted mayors across Metro Manila to implement various preparedness initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety of residents.
The city government of Manila has taken proactive measures, having distributed go-bags to over 100,000 individuals, including students, local officials, and city hall employees. Moreover, Mayor Isko Moreno has announced plans for a city-wide earthquake drill scheduled for next month, aimed at further preparing citizens for potential seismic events.
