The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) has announced the acquisition of a state-of-the-art spatial transcriptomics platform, aimed at enhancing biological tissue analysis. This significant investment is viewed as a pivotal advancement in the realm of precision medicine for Cyprus.
According to CING, the new technology will facilitate detailed studies of gene expression in the natural context of tissues, which is essential for understanding complex biological processes. The funding amounting to €500,000 was provided by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) to support the Department of Cancer Genetics, Therapeutics and Ultrastructural Pathology.
Dr. Fotios Bekris, project coordinator and Director of the Department, expressed gratitude towards the RIF, stating, “The successful proposal is the result of collaboration with our colleagues and represents an investment in the future of biomedical research in Cyprus.” This project, identified as OPEN INFRA/0625/0079, is part of Cyprus” Recovery and Resilience Plan, “Cyprus Tomorrow,” and is funded through the European Union”s Next Generation EU.
The newly acquired platform enables researchers to conduct comprehensive spatial analyses of the transcriptome within biological tissues. It allows for the simultaneous detection of thousands of genes across tissue sections and facilitates protein co-detection, supporting advanced multimodal studies.
CING emphasized that the installation of this system marks a crucial leap forward for research initiatives in Cyprus. This advancement is expected to propel the field of cancer genetics, enhancing the development of precision medicine.
Dr. Bekris highlighted the importance of this technology, noting its potential for immediate benefits to patients through the provision of more targeted and personalized treatments. Furthermore, the platform is anticipated to open new pathways for discoveries related to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and therapy.
CING”s achievement in securing this innovative technology reflects a strong commitment to advancing scientific research in Cyprus and underscores the collaborative efforts of its scientific team.
