Promising Biomarkers Found in Semen for Predicting Prostate Cancer Aggressiveness

A study conducted by the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Pere Virgili (IISPV) along with the Urology Service at the Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII in Tarragona has identified a panel of biomarkers present in semen. This research has yielded “promising results,” particularly when combined with traditional clinical variables.

On October 28, the IISPV reported that preliminary findings, published in the Journal of Urology, indicate this method could enhance early detection of prostate cancer. It may also help identify patients at an increased risk of recurrence following curative treatment and assist in monitoring individuals under active surveillance for this type of tumor.

The research represents a significant advancement towards personalized medicine in urology. While additional prospective studies involving a larger patient cohort are necessary, the current outcomes are highly encouraging, according to the investigators.
