TANKER Foundation Launches Self-Care Handouts for Caregivers of Kidney Patients

The Tamilnad Kidney Research (TANKER) Foundation has introduced an initiative aimed at enhancing the mental health of caregivers for individuals suffering from kidney disease. This effort, developed in partnership with the Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) and the Development Initiative for Promotion of Awareness (DIPA), includes the release of bilingual handouts focused on self-care and mental wellness.

The official launch took place at the TANKER–Greater Chennai Corporation RCME dialysis unit located in Valluvar Kottam, Chennai. During the event, Georgi Abraham, the founder trustee of the TANKER Foundation, presented the English version of the handouts. He emphasized the importance of caregivers prioritizing their own health and well-being.

Additionally, S. Jayalakshmi, a professor of Nephrology at RGGGH, unveiled the Tamil version of the materials. She metaphorically described self-care as akin to “recharging” oneself, highlighting the necessity for caregivers to focus on their own needs.

Experts from The Banyan, the Madras School of Social Work (MSSW), and V-Shesh contributed to the discussion, underscoring the significance of incorporating regular exercise, routine medical check-ups, and personal time into everyday life. This initiative is designed to foster a holistic approach to kidney care, ensuring that both patients and their caregivers are supported and valued.
