Antonio Mercero Reflects on Family Legacy and New Novel “It”s Raining and I Love You”

Antonio Mercero, a writer and screenwriter known for his role in the collective Carmen Mola, has launched his solo novel titled “It”s Raining and I Love You.” This work intertwines epic and intimate narratives, drawing from his family history to present a poignant exploration of personal and collective memory.

In a recent interview, Mercero elaborated on the novel, which chronicles the experiences of the Yarza family across four generations, shaped by the Civil War, post-war period, Franco”s regime, and the transition to democracy. The story is linked by an antique wall clock that carries a mysterious message: “It”s raining and I love you.” One character becomes fixated on deciphering this message, leading to discoveries that could reshape the family”s understanding of its past.

Mercero”s inspiration stemmed from an unexpected encounter with a wall clock listed on Wallapop, signed by his great-great-grandfather, Ramón Mercero, a clockmaker from Lasarte. Although he refrained from purchasing the clock, the idea lingered in his mind, prompting him to delve into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when Lasarte was merely a village.

He describes the process of character development as a blend of historical context and fiction, stating that while many characters are fictionalized, they are rooted in the reality of his Basque family”s history. Lasarte serves as the novel”s backdrop, a location filled with unique historical significance, especially around 1916 when it was not yet recognized as a municipality.

Mercero”s narrative reflects on the whimsical and humorous nature he attributes to his father, who enjoyed uplifting others. He acknowledges this influence in his writing, particularly in his approach to evoking emotions without fear of sentimentality. He aims for readers to experience a blend of poetic resonance and intrigue through his work.

The author also reflects on the challenge and joy of writing solo, contrasting it with his collaborative efforts in Carmen Mola. He cherishes the freedom to make independent creative decisions while also recognizing the companionship and enjoyment found in teamwork.

Winning the Planeta Prize has been a notable milestone for Mercero, as it offers the opportunity to reach a wider audience. He expresses gratitude for the recognition and the potential it brings to his career.

In addition to discussing his own work, Mercero praises the novels of his fellow Carmen Mola writers, highlighting Agustin”s “The Splendor” and Jorge”s “The Spy” for their unique storytelling and engaging plots.

Ultimately, Mercero aspires to leave a legacy as a kind and enjoyable person, alongside his writing. He emphasizes the importance of expressing love and connection, believing that such sentiments resonate deeply with others.
