Attorney General Faces Unusual Trial Over Alleged Secret Disclosure

A significant trial regarding the Spanish Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, is currently under scrutiny, raising questions about the legal proceedings involved. Javier Gómez Bermúdez, a prominent figure in the judiciary, discussed the case during an appearance on “laSexta Xplica.” He noted that the judge”s decision to advance the case to trial suggests that there are substantial indications warranting further examination.

Gómez Bermúdez expressed caution, stating, “I do not have access to all the instructions or reports from the Judicial Police, so it would be reckless to form a conclusion.” He acknowledged that the situation is not entirely surprising, implying that the decision to proceed could stem from factors unrelated to the alleged crime.

The case has garnered attention as it marks a historic moment for the Spanish justice system, being the first instance where a sitting Attorney General faces trial. Seven judges from the Supreme Court will evaluate the case to determine García Ortiz”s culpability.

The circumstances surrounding the trial date back to February 2, 2024, when Carlos Neira, the attorney for Isabel Díaz Ayuso”s partner, sent an email to the Prosecutor”s Office proposing a settlement. Following the lack of response, a subsequent email led to further developments on March 12. The day after, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez from the Community of Madrid”s office stated that the information was false, asserting that it was actually the Prosecutor”s Office proposing a settlement involving González Amador. This was after the Attorney General had discussions with multiple prosecutors regarding the correspondence between the Prosecutor”s Office and González Amador”s attorney.

The unfolding events highlight the complexities and uniqueness of this legal proceeding, as it intertwines political and judicial elements in Spain.
