Augustinus van Hoorn, World Traveler and Ship Chandler, Passes Away

Augustinus (Gus) van Hoorn, a former ship chandler, artist, and avid traveler, passed away on October 24, with his family by his side. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Gus spent the last six decades of his life in San Pedro.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Catherine (Katy) Ostheimer and Michael Naylor, along with five step-grandchildren. Gus also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews residing in the Netherlands, France, Canada, Australia, Colombia, and the United States, who cherish their memories of “Ome Guus.” Preceding him in death were his daughter from a previous marriage, Margaret van Hoorn, his wife, Estella Naylor van Hoorn, and stepdaughter Mary Naylor.

Before settling in Los Angeles, Gus traveled extensively as a merchant seaman. In the LA area, he initially worked in a local ship chandlery before co-founding Standard & Hall Ship Supply with Estella. Beyond his professional pursuits, Gus was passionate about aquacise classes at the San Pedro YMCA and spent countless hours admiring art in museums, as well as creating his own artwork during his travels and at Angels” Gate in San Pedro.

A private celebration of his life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to UNICEF or the Estella Naylor Van Hoorn Foundation at Envhf.com.
