Francis Ford Coppola is set to auction one of his most exclusive timepieces in an effort to recoup financial losses from his recent film, Megalopolis. The film, which had a production cost of 120 million dollars, performed poorly at the box office, generating only 14.3 million dollars internationally.
The auction is scheduled for December 6 and 7, where Coppola will offer several unique items, including a watch that is considered a standout piece in the luxury watch market. This particular watch was developed as a result of a suggestion Coppola made to its maker during a dinner at his home in 2012. The design is inspired by 16th-century aesthetics and features a distinctive method of time indication.
The watch displays hours through the movement of fingers in various sequences, while a white rotating ring around the perimeter of the dial helps to determine the minutes. Coppola opted to sell his personal piece, which he received in 2021, in hopes of covering some expenses related to his latest film that did not meet expectations.
This auction represents not only an opportunity for collectors to acquire a unique watch but also a glimpse into Coppola”s storied career as a filmmaker and his ongoing ventures in the luxury market.
