The National Universities Commission (NUC) has sanctioned the creation of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology located in Omuma, making it the fourth state-owned university in Imo State. The formal handover of the operational license took place in Abuja, where NUC”s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, presented the document to Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Ribadu characterized this approval as a significant milestone, reflecting the state government”s dedication to empowering youth, enhancing manpower development, and fostering knowledge-based growth. He stated, “This development represents a bold and forward-looking investment in education. It is a shared responsibility for all stakeholders, from administrators to students, to ensure that the institution becomes a true center of learning, research excellence, and moral development.”
He further emphasized the NUC”s commitment to providing ongoing support and oversight to guarantee that the new university meets national academic standards, governance, and quality assurance protocols. Additionally, relevant agencies such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will be notified of the university”s establishment.
Upon receiving the license, Governor Uzodimma expressed his joy and referred to the approval as “an answered prayer” for numerous young individuals in Imo who are eager for quality higher education. He noted that the new university, developed in collaboration with Imo Digital City, has established a mentorship partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, aimed at enriching its digital and entrepreneurial curriculum.
According to Uzodimma, the intention is to cultivate innovation-driven graduates who will not only seek employment but also create job opportunities and establish their own enterprises. “The University of Innovation, Science and Technology is therefore designed as both a citadel of learning and a business incubation hub,” he added.
