New Research Group at Aberystwyth University Aims to Combat Global Atrocities

Aberystwyth University has established a new research team dedicated to preventing the abuse of power globally. This initiative, led by Dr. Dakota Ward from the University”s Law and Criminology Department, aims to tackle the manipulation and exploitation of individuals, positions, and platforms.

The newly formed group, known as the Prevention of Exploitation, Atrocities, Corruption and Extremism (PEACE), seeks to enhance collaboration between university staff, students, and external partners. Its primary mission will focus on understanding and mitigating issues related to exploitation, atrocities, corruption, and extremism.

Aberystwyth University has a longstanding tradition in peace studies, having previously supported various global initiatives aimed at creating safe environments for those affected by conflict. The International Criminal Court has issued indictments against numerous individuals for serious crimes such as genocide and war crimes in various countries, highlighting the urgency of the group”s work.

Dr. Ward, who recently received recognition from the Institute of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, expressed her concern over the ongoing global atrocities. She stated, “There is, very tragically, a long list of atrocities and abuses ongoing in the world today. I hope the new group will act as a hub for studying matters that can help tackle or solve these major global challenges.”

She emphasized the importance of existing projects at the university that focus on conflict resolution, migration, and trauma, reinforcing Aberystwyth”s commitment to being a significant international player in addressing both local and global issues.

The PEACE group aims to promote innovative, productive, and collaborative research while also identifying new areas for joint initiatives and encouraging independent studies and events that contribute to solving pressing global problems.
