The Taraba State Government is focusing on improving science education as part of its commitment to nurturing young inventors who can excel in scientific innovation both nationally and internationally. This initiative was highlighted by the State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Usman Muslim Aruwa, during a recent interview in Jalingo.
According to Aruwa, the government has acquired and distributed 126 science kits to various basic and post-basic schools to address the shortage of scientific equipment in the state. He emphasized that these kits have been instrumental in motivating students, particularly in rural areas, by enhancing their practical learning experiences.
The Commissioner remarked, “The state government aims to uncover young innovators and inventors who will represent us on a global platform in science and technology.” He elaborated on the Catch Them Young program, which includes the Junior Engineers Technicians and Science Club (JETSC). This initiative is designed to spark interest in science-related subjects among students without overwhelming them.
By engaging students early, the program aims to cultivate their innovative ideas and creativity, paving the way for future contributions to the field of science. Aruwa noted, “The significance of research in tertiary institutions lies in addressing local community challenges.” He commended Governor Kefas for his visionary approach to narrowing the gap between educational institutions and industry needs.
The Commissioner also pointed out that there is an ongoing technology transfer initiative between universities and local industries. He mentioned that the state is benefiting from the Federal Government”s intellectual property policy, which provides support from various agencies to help Taraba compete effectively in the job market.
He stated, “Collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology will ensure that any research conducted in our tertiary institutions is protected.” This strategic approach aims to ensure that Taraba State produces competitive products in the labor market, ultimately contributing to the state”s economic development.
