Abyom SpaceTech Advances India”s Reusable Rocket Technology with Defence Applications

Abyom SpaceTech Private Limited, a Hyderabad-based space startup, recently marked its fifth foundation day, focusing on pioneering the development of reusable launch vehicles, beginning with sounding rockets. The company is led by VK Saraswat, who has served as the former Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is currently an advisor at NITI Aayog.

Abyom has created several proprietary technologies that are confidential. To facilitate testing of its rockets, the company has established a modular and mobile test infrastructure that is unique in India, which is available as a service. This facility is designed for both civilian rocket development and defence propulsion research, providing support to academic institutions and emerging propulsion entities.

The technologies developed by Abyom are intended for dual-use, addressing both commercial spaceflight and defence needs. The Engine Control System (ECS), for example, is a modular platform applicable in rockets, missiles, and advanced propulsion systems. The distinction lies in their applications: rockets typically carry scientific payloads, while missiles are designed to deliver warheads or submunitions.

Additionally, the Spark Torch Ignition System serves as a highly reliable igniter suitable for reusable space engines and defence-grade propulsion units. The adaptable nature of Abyom”s technology is aimed at promoting equitable access to space while simultaneously enhancing national defence capabilities.

Abyom is on track to showcase a vertical takeoff vertical landing (VTVL) prototype in the coming year, marking a significant step towards the realization of reusable rockets. According to the founder and CEO, Jainul Abedin, “With these technologies, we aim to cut per-launch costs significantly and introduce India”s first VTVL demonstrator. This is our leap toward affordable, reusable, and sustainable space access. At Abyom, we believe reusability is not just a choice – it is the future of space exploration. Our innovations are designed with both commercial scalability and defence readiness in mind, ensuring India is equipped to lead in a rapidly evolving global space economy.”
