AI Robots Combat Loneliness Among Seniors in South Korea

In South Korea, AI-powered dolls are being utilized to help elderly individuals cope with feelings of loneliness. These innovative companion robots are developed by a local startup named Hyodol, which derives its name from a Confucian principle that emphasizes the importance of caring for the elderly.

Each robot is priced at approximately $1,150 and is designed to engage users in conversation using technology similar to ChatGPT. They serve multiple functions, including reminding seniors to take their medication or eat meals. Additionally, these robots can notify social workers and family members during emergencies, providing emotional support by expressing sentiments like, “Grandma, I miss you even when you”re by my side.”

Equipped with an infrared sensor, the robots can alert caregivers if they detect no movement for a continuous 24-hour period. A microphone embedded in the robot records answers to daily wellness questions, such as “How are you feeling today?” and “Are you in pain?”

As South Korea faces a significant aging population, many older adults experience profound loneliness, often accompanied by depression, dementia, and chronic health issues. Experts highlight that for many, the fear of loneliness outweighs the fear of death. Currently, over 12,000 Hyodol robots are deployed across the nation.

This situation in South Korea reflects similar challenges in other developed countries. In Japan, a robotic pet named Paro offers companionship to older individuals. In New York City apartments, ElliQ, an AI robot resembling a Pixar lamp, engages seniors in meaningful conversations. Meanwhile, in Singapore, a humanoid robot named Dexie is leading bingo sessions at senior care facilities.

Hyodol is planning to expand its market outreach, aiming for a debut in the United States by 2026. The eldercare robotics market is projected to grow significantly, with estimates suggesting it could reach $7.7 billion by 2030, according to Research and Markets, a market research firm.
