GitHub has revealed in its Octoverse 2025 report that India is poised to surpass the United States in the number of software developers by the year 2030. Currently, the United States leads with a developer community of 28 million, but India is expected to add over 35.6 million new developers, bringing its total to approximately 57.5 million. In contrast, the U.S. is projected to have around 54.7 million developers by that time.
The report indicates that the growth of the developer community in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in India, is being driven by government initiatives aimed at enhancing skills and the increasing availability of AI-assisted tools in local languages. Following India, Brazil is anticipated to become the third largest developer community, expanding from 6.9 million to approximately 19.6 million, while China is expected to reach about 17.7 million developers.
As these global communities expand, the focus of developers is increasingly shifting towards artificial intelligence (AI). According to the report, TypeScript has emerged as the leading programming language, with a year-on-year growth in contributors of 66 percent, resulting in over 1 million contributors. Python follows in second place with 850,000 contributions, and JavaScript ranks third with 427,000 contributions.
GitHub explained that this trend reflects a decade-long transition towards typed JavaScript, marking a new standard in modern software development. The rise of frameworks that default to TypeScript and the advantages of AI-assisted development are cited as key factors, with typed languages offering more reliable code in production environments.
GitHub”s findings also highlight the growing integration of AI into the daily workflows of developers. The number of AI-related repositories has surpassed 4.3 million, nearly doubling in the last two years. Notably, 80 percent of new users are utilizing GitHub”s Copilot technology within their first week on the platform, illustrating that AI is not just a tool for experienced developers but is becoming a fundamental part of the developer experience.
The report further indicates that the scale of AI adoption is increasing, with 1.13 million public repositories relying on generative AI SDKs, marking a 178 percent rise from the previous year. Development projects are transitioning from experimental phases to production deployment, and tools such as GitHub”s own Copilot are becoming integral to everyday coding practices.
Despite the rapid advancements in AI technology, GitHub insists that the narrative surrounding developers in 2025 is not about competition between AI and human programmers. Instead, it emphasizes the evolution of developers in an AI-driven landscape, where they will orchestrate agents, shape programming languages, and influence broader ecosystems.
As the developer community continues to grow and evolve, the challenge remains for professionals in the field to adapt and thrive alongside advancing AI technologies.
