NASENI Drives Nigeria”s Engineering and Manufacturing Growth

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is fulfilling its role as the sole intervention agency established by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Since its inception in 1992, NASENI has been dedicated to fostering a robust and dynamic infrastructure that supports science and engineering, aimed at achieving self-sustaining industrialization within Nigeria.

To facilitate socio-economic transformation, NASENI has made substantial investments in critical sectors, particularly in engineering and manufacturing. Its efforts have positioned the agency as a key player in enhancing Nigeria”s competitiveness and knowledge economy, providing essential capital products for designing, fabricating, and mass-producing machinery and equipment. This, in turn, creates a conducive environment for sustainable industrial growth.

NASENI”s initiatives span various sectors, including agriculture, aviation, renewable energy, health, education, and transportation. The agency focuses on empowering Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) by imparting necessary technologies and engineering practices to meet international standards, thereby nurturing local industries.

Development Institutes and Technological Advancements

To achieve its objectives, NASENI has established several development institutes across Nigeria, each dedicated to specialized areas. For instance, the Scientific Equipment Development Institute in Enugu produces scientific equipment, while the Engineering Materials Development Institute in Akure focuses on creating various engineering materials. Other institutes include the Electronic Development Institute in Awka and the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute in Kano, which contribute to improving local manufacturing capabilities.

NASENI also operates NASENI Solar Energy Limited, which has a capacity of 50 megawatts for solar panel production. This initiative is part of NASENI”s larger goal to harness renewable energy technologies, supporting Nigeria”s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

Innovations Across Sectors

The agency has made significant strides in the power sector by producing various electrical components, including solar panels and energy-efficient lighting systems. In agriculture, NASENI has developed machines such as smart irrigation systems and unmanned aerial vehicles for agricultural purposes. Additionally, innovations in the industrial sector include the production of sandcrete machines and aluminum die molds.

Furthermore, NASENI has ventured into the transportation sector with the launch of Nigerian-made motorcycles and electric vehicles, reinforcing its commitment to reducing reliance on imported technologies. The agency has also introduced water pumps and drilling rigs to improve access to clean water.

Under the leadership of Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who was appointed in 2023, NASENI has transformed into a pivotal force for technological advancement in Nigeria. The agency has shifted its focus towards commercialization, resulting in over 40 market-ready products, including laptops, smartphones, and solar-powered devices.

Through initiatives such as the NASENI Tractor Recovery Project, which refurbished tractors for agricultural use, and other technology transfer programs, NASENI aims to bridge the gap between research and practical applications. This strategy not only fosters job creation but also enhances local industrial capacity.

As Nigeria prepares for the 4th Industrial Revolution, NASENI is strategically positioned to lead the charge by focusing on products that meet the nation”s needs. The future looks promising as the agency continues to innovate and drive industrial growth across the country.
