Sarawak to Launch New Advanced Research Center at Swinburne University

The Sarawak government has announced plans to establish a new research center at the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg revealed this initiative during the 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on October 28.

Abang Johari stated that the state has earmarked 10 acres of land for this advanced research facility, with the option to expand to 15 acres if necessary. He emphasized that the center will be funded and equipped by the state government with state-of-the-art technology aimed at cultivating world-class researchers and innovators in Sarawak.

During his address, Abang Johari highlighted the need for Sarawak to progress in four strategic areas over the next 25 years: energy, semiconductors, petrochemicals, and mineral science. He believes these sectors are vital for transforming Sarawak into a high-income, technologically advanced economy. “Sarawak has abundant resources; what we require now is human capital,” he stated, pointing out that Swinburne must play a crucial role in nurturing highly skilled individuals capable of innovating with local materials.

The Premier noted that Sarawak is at a pivotal stage in its journey towards becoming a developed state by 2030. This journey will focus on the digital economy, renewable energy, particularly hydrogen, and embracing Industry 4.0. “To realize this vision, we need a new generation of talent, including engineers familiar with both traditional systems and emerging technologies, business leaders who can navigate the global landscape while remaining connected to local needs, IT professionals driving digital change, and researchers tackling real-world challenges faced by industries and communities,” he explained.

He remarked that the demands of today”s workforce differ significantly from those of 25 years ago. “Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, automation, and sustainable technologies are no longer concepts of the future; they are current realities shaping industries,” he noted. As a result, graduates from Swinburne Sarawak must possess not only technical expertise but also critical thinking skills, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

In his congratulatory message to Swinburne Sarawak on its 25th anniversary, Abang Johari acknowledged the institution”s contributions to education and culture in the region. He praised its efforts in shaping students and fostering a culture that encourages young people to pursue knowledge and contribute to Sarawak”s development.

He further remarked that the establishment of Swinburne Sarawak as a branch of Swinburne University of Technology in Australia was a strategic decision, representing a joint investment in the state”s people and future. “This required vision from the university”s leadership, who recognized our region”s potential, and a commitment from the Sarawak government, which has always prioritized investment in education as fundamental to our economic progress,” he added.

Present at the event were several dignitaries, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, and Swinburne University of Technology Vice-Chancellor and President Prof Pascale Quester.
