Smoltek Hydrogen Addresses Global Iridium Shortage at Expo 2025

Smoltek Hydrogen recently participated in the Hydrogen Technology World Expo 2025, held in Hamburg, Germany, which is recognized as the largest global event dedicated to innovations in hydrogen and electrolysis technology. During the event, Ellinor Ehrnberg, the President of Smoltek Hydrogen, was invited to engage in a panel discussion focused on “Overcoming the Key Obstacles in Electrolyzer Expansion” on October 30, 2025.

In her address, Ehrnberg underscored a significant challenge currently faced by the hydrogen industry: the worldwide shortage of iridium. She stated, “Only 7–9 tons are mined globally each year, and production cannot be increased. Unless we drastically reduce the amount used in hydrogen production, the iridium shortage will stop the scale-up of green hydrogen before it even starts.” This stark warning illustrates the urgent need for the industry to reassess its resource utilization.

Furthermore, Ehrnberg introduced Smoltek”s innovative solution, which leverages nanotechnology to facilitate the production of large-scale, fossil-free hydrogen. This approach aims to create smaller and more cost-effective electrolyzers, thereby addressing some of the limitations posed by current methods. She emphasized the importance of rethinking materials, manufacturing processes, and the prevailing mindsets that have historically shaped the industry, stating, “Every atom counts.” This perspective is vital as the hydrogen sector seeks to expand sustainably and efficiently while grappling with resource constraints.

The insights shared at the expo highlight the pressing need for innovation and adaptation in the face of material shortages, particularly as the demand for green hydrogen continues to rise globally.
