The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life, from generating emails to assisting in medical diagnoses, has shifted from the realm of science fiction to reality. Despite its advantages, there is a palpable divide in public sentiment towards AI. While some embrace these technologies, others express anxiety, suspicion, and even feelings of betrayal. This disparity can be traced back to the fundamental ways in which our brains process risk and trust.

Humans tend to trust systems that they can comprehend. Traditional tools operate in a straightforward manner; for instance, turning a key starts a car, and pressing a button calls an elevator. In contrast, many AI systems function as “black boxes,” where users input information but do not understand the underlying decision-making process. This lack of transparency can be psychologically unsettling, as individuals prefer to see clear cause-and-effect relationships and to be able to question outcomes. This phenomenon contributes to what is known as algorithm aversion, a term introduced by marketing researcher Berkeley Dietvorst and colleagues. Their studies revealed that people often favor flawed human judgment over algorithmic decisions, especially after observing even a single error from an algorithm.

Although we recognize that AI lacks emotions and personal agendas, we often project human-like qualities onto these systems. For example, some users find it unsettling when ChatGPT responds with excessive politeness, or when recommendation algorithms become too accurate, leading to feelings of intrusion. This tendency to attribute human intentions to AI is a form of anthropomorphism. Research by communication scholars Clifford Nass and Byron Reeves indicates that people interact socially with machines, despite knowing they are not human.

One intriguing aspect of behavioral science is that people often exhibit greater tolerance for human mistakes than for those made by machines. Human errors are seen as understandable, prompting empathy, while mistakes made by algorithms—especially those presented as objective—can lead to feelings of betrayal. This reaction relates to research on expectation violation, where disruptions in anticipated behavior lead to discomfort and a loss of trust. When machines fail to meet our expectations, particularly by producing biased or inappropriate results, the disappointment can be acute.

For many professionals, such as teachers, writers, lawyers, and designers, the advent of AI tools poses not only a challenge of automation but also an existential crisis regarding the value of their skills and their humanity. This situation can trigger identity threats, as explored by social psychologist Claude Steele, indicating a fear that one”s expertise may be undermined. Consequently, this can result in resistance to technology, defensiveness, or outright rejection of AI, as distrust emerges as a psychological defense mechanism.

Trust in humans is built on more than just logic; it encompasses non-verbal cues like tone and body language, which AI inherently lacks. Even if AI is adept and seemingly charming, it cannot provide the emotional reassurance that a human can offer. This phenomenon is reminiscent of the “uncanny valley,” a concept articulated by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori, referring to the discomfort felt when something appears almost human but is not quite right. The absence of emotional engagement with AI can be interpreted as coldness or deceit.

It is essential to acknowledge that not all skepticism towards AI is unfounded. Algorithms have been shown to perpetuate existing biases, especially in sensitive areas such as hiring, law enforcement, and credit scoring. Individuals who have previously faced disadvantages due to flawed data systems are not exhibiting paranoia; they are exercising caution. This caution aligns with the broader psychological concept of learned distrust, where repeated failures of institutions lead to justified skepticism, which can serve as a protective measure. Simply urging individuals to “trust the system” is often ineffective; rather, trust must be actively cultivated. This can be achieved through the development of AI tools that promote transparency, accountability, and user agency. To foster acceptance, AI must evolve from a black box into a collaborative dialogue that invites users to engage meaningfully.
